How much do you need to win back a loss? More than you lost.
Set the loss. The gain you need is measured from what's left, so it grows faster than the loss.

+25%
to get back to the start after −20%
From 100 you're at 80. Getting 20 back is 20 of 80: +25%.
The math
After a loss of L, the account is 1 − L. Getting back to 1 takes L ÷ (1 − L), because the gain is measured from what’s left. −10% needs +11%, −20% needs +25%, −30% needs +43%, −50% needs +100%.
